Debating Between Lightroom and Photoshop CS3

Posted on: 9 March 2007

When Adobe rolled out it’s Beta version of Lightroom it was instant success. Photographers seemed to immediately fall in love with the software. After using both the Beta version and Version 1, I can already see no reason to use Adobe Bridge. So now the question is do I really want to upgrade to Photoshop CS3 or will Lightroom get the job done?

Debbie Grossman discusses the finer points of Lightroom in her article, The $199 Photoshop Killer? I think she makes some interesting points but sums it up nicely with:

If you rarely dodge, burn, or composite — if you’re not the kind of image fixer who regularly works on small areas of your picture at a time — you may never need Photoshop again. And if you’ve never used Photoshop before, Lightroom, rather than Photoshop’s little sister, Photoshop Elements, may now be the best program for those who are new to shooting digital or working with RAW images. Lightroom is a simple and sophisticated tool for the kind of people we know best: the ones who really love photography.
