Goals for 2008

Posted on: 1 January 2008

I’m in the process of making goals for 2008.

I heard in church on Sunday a nice discussion of the difference between goals and resolutions. Resolutions are really just precursors to failure. They’re more like admonitions to oneself. Aren’t they? Don’t you think so. For me goals, particular personal goals, are something that I can work with much better than resolutions.

I understand there was a study once about people who actually have goals and write them down. This was a longitudinal study and basically it showed that between the three groups: those who don’t have goals, those who have them but don’t write them down, and those who have them and write them down, the last group was far more successful in life.

I’ve always been in the second group. I think about goals. I ponder over what would be good to achieve. I think what’s really important for myself is to be careful in distinguishing between goals and hopes and dreams. We all hope for things and we dream of things, but if we make goals, this implies that it is not a hope or a dream but something that we will make a reality. We set out to achieve goals.

I’m going to write my goals down for 2008. But that’s not the end of it.

I’m going to refer to my goals and stay on track in 2008.

2008 is MY year.

Make it your year too.
