New Tutorials Worth Checking Out

Posted on: 17 July 2008

Layers Magazine has three tutorials worth checking out. Two are for Adobe Lightroom and one is for Adobe Photoshop.

First, if you’re using the Adobe Lightroom, version 2.0 Beta, you really should check out this tutorial. This tutorial covers filters, collections, key words, retouching, split toning, vignettes, the develop module, the print module and so much more. I can’t imagine anyone delving into Lightroom without first previewing the capabilities of this awesome software update.

The most recent release of Lightroom is better than ever. It’s faster and more robust, includes some great new tools, and much more. And it’s just a preview of things to come when the final version ships later this year. So let’s take a look at a few tips that will help you take advantage of some of the new features in the Photoshop Lightroom 2 Beta.

Next up is a tutorial on how to create Stunning Black and White Images using Adobe Lightroom. There may be a lot of presets already available for those who just want to click and be done with their images. However, for those who want to more fully understand how to “create” stunning black and white images on their own and make their own presets, this is the tutorial for you.

There are many reasons why I thoroughly enjoy using Lightroom, and near the top of my list is creating black-and-white images. Although the majority of my work is in color, I’m constantly drawn to black-and-white photography because it uniquely “…reduces, simplifies, goes deep, and gets beneath the surface,” as photographer Ryan Caldwell explains.

Finally we come to the Layers Tutorial for Photoshop CS3 that is a favorite of mine–How to Create Outlines.

Some effects look best when applied to an entire photo, while other effects look best when used only in certain areas. By nature, the filter used in this technique will affect the entire photo, but with a little (easy) work, you can create an interesting outline effect on just part of your photo.
